The Eye Doctor

"Look Mom! It's a banana!"

Yesterday I took Claire to the eye doctor. She does this strange blinking thing periodically and tends to walk into things. I just wanted to be sure nothing was wrong with her sight.

After a 20 minute exam, the optometrist asked to "have a word". She told me that she felt Claire needed to be held back a year from starting school. "OH REALLY!?!? I thought... remembering the school officials who told me a couple of weeks ago that Claire was no different from her peers..."

I told her we are not going to hold Claire back at this time. She knows her letters and can count. Though she is delayed, she continues to make great progress. I don't want to hold her back now and have her ask me in 10 years why Paige (who is 38 days older) is now a year above her in school. If for some reason, she needs to repeat kindergarten, so be it. I just have a hard time hearing an order from someone who has met my child for just 20 minutes.

No glasses.... for now. Thank goodness. We go back in a month to do the test again as Claire is not a fan of testing.

Parenting is a strange, strange experience....
